In 2nd grade we spent the month of March sharing biographies. Some of the biographies we read were of lesser-known people like Tony Sarg, the man who created the balloons for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade (the book was called Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Parade by Melissa Sweet). Some were more well-known people, like Jacques Costeau (Manfish by Jennifer Berne) and Dr. Seuss (The Boy on Fairfield Street: How Ted Geisel Grew Up to Become Dr. Seuss by Kathleen Krull). The last biography we read was A Picture Book of Harry Houdini by David Adler. The students then created a timeline of the important events in Houdini's life using Pic Collage on the iPad. Here is their awesome work!
Throughout the week of December 7th, all 2nd graders at Increase Miller celebrated Computer Science Education Week by participating in Hour of Code during their library special. Students worked in pairs to write code to solve a series of specific challenges starring their favorite characters from Angry Birds, and had a great time watching their code come to life on screen in front of them! To learn more about Hour of Code and continue learning coding from home, visit code.org.
This week each 2nd grade class played a getting to know you game, then reviewed library procedures and behavioral expectations. Students in 2nd grade may check out up to 2 books at a time.
