This week in library we read The Right Word: Roget and his Thesaurus, the biography of Peter Roget. The class then worked in pairs to look up an assigned word in the thesaurus and write down a number of the word's synonyms. Then they created a Keynote presentation to illustrate their word. Here are their presentations! expensivepredictstrongsadruckusMISCHIEVOUSinfiniteDeliciousCourageThroughout the week of December 7th, all 5th graders at Increase Miller celebrated Computer Science Education Week by participating in Hour of Code during their library special. Students wrote code to solve a series of specific challenges starring favorite characters from Minecraft, and had a great time watching their code come to life on screen in front of them! We have been busily working on creating book trailers for the books we read over the summer. First, we watched some exemplar book trailers created by other elementary school students. Then, we carefully created storyboards and wrote the script for our book trailers. Then we discussed how to find good images by selecting careful search terms and narrowing our search. Students used iPads to find and save the pictures they felt best represented their books. Then, they used the Book Creator app to create their trailers. Most of our trailers are still a work in a progress, but a few students have already completed their work! Check out the finished products below, and stay tuned for many more to come! Great work, 5th grade! Students in 5th grade may check out up to 5 books at a time, although they're encouraged to take only as many as they can read in a week. They are also welcome to visit the library during open book exchange time any afternoon, with permission of their classroom teacher.
