This month in library we have been studying biographies. We read the biography of Peter Roget and learned the story of how his thesaurus came to be. Then the students learned how to use the thesaurus, and worked in groups to look up words and find their synonyms. They created a Keynote presentation of their words and the synonyms using the iPads. Here is the result of their hard work! Throughout the week of December 7th, all 3rd graders at Increase Miller celebrated Computer Science Education Week by participating in Hour of Code during their library special. Students wrote code to solve a series of specific challenges starring favorite characters from Star Wars, and had a great time watching their code come to life on screen in front of them! To learn more about Hour of Code and continue learning coding from home, visit code.org. First, they filled out a paper recommendation about one of the books they read this summer, which are now hanging up in the hallway outside the library. Then, we used the app Book Creator on the ipads to narrate our book recommendations. Stay tuned, each class's book recommendations will be posted soon!
This week each 3rd grade class reviewed library procedures and created their own list of library behavioral expectations. Students in 3rd grade may check out up to 3 books at a time, although they're encouraged to take only as many as they can read in a week. They are also welcome to visit the library during open book exchange time any afternoon, with permission of their classroom teacher.
